Pammi Kalra was born in New Delhi, India. She grew up in a culture which was focused towards science and technology, but had no appreciation for arts. So she was deprived of the richness of the art world during early years of life, but this was compensated by the abundance of mystical knowledge available in India. This influenced her as a person as well as an artist.
Pammi worked in the software industry and moved to the US in 2000 during the tech boom. While living in the US , she was accidentally pushed into the dark , forbidden world of art , after switching to a TV channel showing the Jerry Yarnell art show. Just the very process of creating of a painting from a blank canvas and some colors mesmerized her and she never forgot that first experience of creating visual artwork.
Coming from the cerebral and mechanical world of software industry, she found art, so much closer to the human heart and soul. She found her calling and made the transition from the field of science to art. Initially she was painting landscapes, followed by a phase of conceptual paintings. But while taking art classes, her art instructors at community colleges, encouraged her experimental nature, and playfulness with colors and motivated her to move into non-objective abstract art. She is influenced by artists like Jasper Johns, Gerhard Richter.
Her art is a dynamic playful manifestation of energy, with no ultimate purpose or end, concerned only with the moment, in which it is happening. Currently, through her art, Pammi is trying to catch hold of that missed experience , which almost every child goes through during early years of life like fooling around with colors, playing with clay. Her technique involves pouring and dripping of viscous paint, which allows her spontaniety, let-go and unpredictable results in her artwork.
